PYRCA – THE AWARD WHERE YOUR CHILD’S VOTE MATTERS!
The Pennsylvania Young Reader’s Choice Award is sponsored by the Pennsylvania School Librarians Association. The purpose of the award is to promote the reading of quality books by young people in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, to promote teacher and librarian involvement in children’s and young adult literature, and to honor authors whose works have been recognized by the students of Pennsylvania. Books were purchased through a grant from the Pennsylvania Humanities Council.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE:
Read three or more! Your child or teen chooses to read at least three (3) of the titles in the appropriate grade band. Additional titles may be read to participate but three will be the minimum. Having an adult or older child read-aloud to developing readers is completely appropriate for participation! Use our coloring maps or bookmarks for tracking your progress.
We will use a few of these titles in online read-alouds beginning in October through early March during Sheltering Storytime (for the youngest age group) on alternate Wednesdays. They will be read in their entirety and watching online counts as reading for the voting activity (below).
Book clubs for 3rd-12th grade bands will offer read-aloud of the first chapter, which don’t count as a full reading but may motivate your young person to check the book out! 3rd-6th grade read-aloud on Wednesday afternoons, and two sessions on Fridays for the 6th-8th and 9th through 12th grade level books. 3rd and 6th grade-age children may choose to read either program level (or both) but may only vote in one age group ballot.
The vote:
In late February or early March (depending on the PYRCA guidance) we will post a ‘ballot’ for each age group. Your child will report the titles that were read (3 or more), and the favorite choice in the ballot form. Then in March, we will announce the winner here and on our social media. We’ll also let everyone know the share of our community votes each book received!
Every child and teen who votes in the March ‘election’ will receive a gift book from our giveaway supply and a certificate!
Additional activities:
We’ll post some educator-endorsed activities for many of these books, as well as author videos, craft kits, and more! Augment your homeschool curriculum with these ideas!
