Quarryville Library Announces Special STEM Programs for Fall 2018

Updated 10/17/2018 – new Robot Story Time Dates

The Quarryville Library is excited to announce our Fall 2018 STEM program calendar. STEM, short for Science Technology, Engineering, and Math, and STEM-based programming is all about getting kids and families excited about math and the sciences.

The library is planning two series of free STEM programs in October and November. One series is meant for younger children ages 4 – 7 years. the other for older children ages 8 – 12 years.

For younger children is our series of special STEM story times, Robot Adventures. This series is scheduled for Tuesdays at 1:30 pm on the following four dates: Oct. 23; Nov. 6,  13, and 20. These story times use the popular coding toy Cubetto to teach basic coding and computational thinking, all without the use of a screen. Attendees will join little robot Cubetto on a series of adventures around the globe: dive into the deep oceans, journey through Egypt, and even go to outer space! This series is best for ages 4 – 7, with a caregiver.

For older children, we are offering STEM Saturdays, scheduled for three Saturdays in October & November. These three programs are best for children ages 8 – 11 years.

ozobot gatheringThe first is on October 13, 10:30am to 1 pm and is called Robot Games. Participants will be given a variety of tasks to complete, using the selection of robots provided. Figure out the strengths and weaknesses of each robot, and see if you can complete the maze, knock over the tower, and more.

The second STEM Saturday is scheduled for Nov. 3, 10:30 am to 1 pm and is titled Building Brigade. Participants will try to build the tallest, the most stable, or the weirdest structure using a variety of engineering toys.

Our final STEM Saturday is on Nov. 17, 11 am—12:30 pm. This extra special STEM Saturday is called Virtual Reality, and will feature the STEM Mobile, provided by the Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania. Participants are invited to, “Travel to new and exciting places using our virtual reality viewers!” (VR program description from GS Heart of PA STEM Mobile website.) (Please note: program provided by the Girl Scouts in the Heart of PA, but is available to all children.)

Registration is required for the STEM Saturdays, since participation is limited to 30 kids per week. Each week has a separate registration. Register on our online events calendar, by calling 717-786-1336, or by emailing
