Become a Volunteer!

How To Volunteer

We are excited that you are interested in spending your time volunteering with the Quarryville Library. As you read on, you’ll find we have many opportunities for volunteers of all ages and abilities.

When you’re ready to start volunteering, submit a volunteer application to the library. Applications can be found at the front desk or by clicking on this link. Most volunteers over 18 need to complete clearances that may take a few weeks to arrive. Volunteers will be trained once their paperwork is complete.

Some of our opportunities can be used to fulfill school, church or civic organization community service requirements.

Library Opportunities

  • Adopt a Shelf

An incorrectly shelved book is a lost book! Adopt a few of our bookshelves, perhaps in your favorite genre, and help us keep them in order. This is a great opportunity for children under the age of fourteen to volunteer as well as others who are short on time. This opportunity allows you to set your own schedule.

  • Art Committee Member

The Art Committee of the Quarryville Library keeps the C.X. Carlson Cultural Room looking fresh by selecting, hanging and hosting beautiful art shows several times a year. Members of this committee recruit local artists, including painters, photographers, quilters, mixed media artists and others, to participate in shows lasting one to two months. They also host an opening reception party for each new exhibit, giving viewers a chance to meet and talk to the displaying artist(s).

  • Board of Trustees Member

The Quarryville Library Board of Trustees is tasked with advocating and fundraising for the library. They meet once a month to conduct business and are a policy-making board with the ability to make decisions about programs, budgets, and policies. Board members advocate for the library at local municipal meetings by listening to the community’s needs and concerns, assist in the annual budgeting process, and support and participate in library fundraisers, activities, and programs. Board member terms last three years.

  • Book Shelving

Book shelving volunteers are a vital and integral part of the daily operations of our library. They support our library staff by helping them to shelve items in the proper place. These volunteers are also given other behind-the-scenes duties relating to circulation. Volunteers are assigned shifts during the library’s normal business hours and are always working alongside a library staff person. Shifts are generally two hours long and are available in the morning, afternoon, or evening.

  • Children’s Programming Volunteer

If you love to work with children and enjoy interactive activities, then maybe you’ll consider working as a volunteer with our Youth Services Coordinator. Programs for kids include LEGO block party, family movie night, storytimes and various craft and art related programs. Volunteers can help prepare activities, organize and set up the learning environment, help sign in children and work with children who need assistance.

Friends of the Library Volunteer Opportunities

The Friends of the Quarryville Library are a non-profit organization of community-minded library lovers who conduct fundraising events to support the library. The Friends generally meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 10:00am, but you don’t have to make the meeting to join the group! A few of their volunteer opportunities include:

  • Used Book Sorters and Organizers

Friends are needed to help sort books by genres, publication dates and quality. Many of the volunteers for this position come to the library in the morning to sort donations and prepare for the book sales.

  • Book Sale Workers

When we hold our book sales, workers are needed for shifts throughout the day. These volunteers collect money and continue to keep the sale area stocked and organized.

  • Bakers

The Friends are in need of bakers for many of our events. If you like to bake but can’t eat it all, please consider being part of this team.

  • Used Book Store Volunteers

Our used book store is staffed by a wonderful crew of dedicated volunteers, who sell items donated to the library by our generous community. Find out more about volunteering in the bookstore here.
