New STEM Programs in 2019

New Community Partnership Expands Quarryville Library’s STEM Program Offerings

The Quarryville Library is offering a new series of STEM activities! STEM is short for Science Technology, Engineering, and Math, and STEM-based programming is all about getting kids and families excited about math and the sciences.

These monthly programs are made possible thanks to a new partnership with Agilent Technologies via local STEM educator Bob Lydum. Bob Lydum served as the east coast public affairs manager for Agilent Technologies, and worked hard to bring his passion for science, technology, engineering, and math into the community by implementing Agilent After-School Science programs in the mid-Atlantic region. Mr. Bob (as students call him) has continued to volunteer as a STEM educator following his retirement in 2010, conducting workshops at the Lancaster Science Factory and Saturday programs for students at TEC CENTRO in downtown Lancaster. Now Mr. Bob is joining youth services coordinator Randi Kennedy and volunteers to expand the popular STEM programs at the Quarryville Library!

The hands-on kits–most of which participants get to keep at the end of the program–are provided by Agilent Technologies. Agilent Technologies is a global leader in diagnostic testing focused on food, environmental, forensics, energy and pharmaceutical markets. The company’s After-School Science program includes hands-on life, physical, and earth-science experiments that have been designed as complete “programs-in-a-box”.

The Quarryville Library is planning to hold STEM Saturdays during the spring, summer, and fall, as well as three Family Science Nights, using the Agilent After-School Science kits. Each event will use a different kit based around a theme, such as electricity, the solar system, solar energy, and more. The first program is coming up on January 26th, 10 am – 11:30 am!

This series of STEM Saturdays and Family Science Nights are best for children ages 8 – 12 years of age, or families with a child or children in this age range.

Participation is limited by kit availability, so registration is preferred. Walk-ins welcome as class size allows. You can register by clicking on the links below and going to our event calendar, by calling 717-786-1336, or by emailing library@quarryvillelibrary.org.
